AI is now in our offices, on our screens, and fundamentally reshaping how we work. But using AI effectively is a new skill entirely. It’s a dialogue. Last week, on June 20, 2025, our team at Greystack Technologies dove headfirst into this new reality at the National AI Prompt Design Challenge Philippines.
The event presented a fascinating task: build a functional AI chatbot for a professional setting with absolutely no code. This experience was more than a competition; consequently, it was a masterclass in the art of AI communication.
The AI Prompt Design Challenge: Building a Solution with Words as a Framework
Our team huddled together, the mission crystal clear. We needed to create a practical AI tool to solve a real problem with the tools and limits we’re given. The twist? Our only tools were words, logic, and creativity. This “no-code” constraint immediately shifted our focus from technical programming to strategic communication.
It was a true test of prompt engineering. We developed a small AI chatbot application called GabAI (Not associated with GabAI by Tagpros Education. Namesake used within the competition only).
GabAI: A Communication Coach in Your Pocket
Office interactions can get awkward. Whether it’s asking a favor, raising a concern, or giving feedback, the fear of miscommunication holds many people back. GabAI (Guidance and Assistance for Better Communication through AI) aimed to bridge that gap.
Our goal was simple: create an AI assistant that could help users prep for sensitive conversations. GabAI evaluates a few key inputs—your role, your recipient’s role, both of your personalities, and the method of interaction (chat, email, in-person). It then probes for context, simulates conversations, drafts tailored messages, and lays out action plans.
All of this was achieved through prompt engineering alone. We didn’t write a single line of code.
Designing GabAI: How Prompt Engineering Became the Core
Building GabAI required us to think like both architects and writers. We defined detailed user-system prompts that functioned like mini-blueprints. The key was to specify:
- The AI’s role (a workplace communication expert).
- Step-by-step logic using Chain-of-Thought prompts.
- Output formats, fallback behaviors, and tone guidelines.
We structured everything around a conversational workflow: input > probe > simulate > respond > act. The key was clarity. Every instruction had to be unmistakable.
This is where prompt engineering shines. It’s not just about asking a question, but also instructing with purpose.
Testing and Tuning: Where GabAI Learned to Listen
After setting up our initial prompts, we didn’t stop there. We put GabAI to the test through six stages:
- Standard user queries (straightforward best-case usage scenarios).
- Incomplete or missing inputs.
- Random and irrelevant messages.
- Edge-case situational contexts.
- Out-of-scope requests—a tricky but essential step.
- Adversarial prompts.
Initially, GabAI struggled. It broke character, strayed from its scope, and generated loosely accurate replies. But each failure taught us something vital: vague prompts equal vague outputs. Once we refined the rules and clarified our instructions, GabAI started behaving exactly as intended.
Our breakthrough came when we detailed everything—even how to reject questions beyond its function. That level of specificity turned a generic chatbot into a focused, reliable communication coach.
This rigorous process crystallized our main takeaway from the AI prompt design challenge: getting the results you want requires being incredibly detailed in how you set the rules.
The Emerging Role of the Prompt Engineer
Throughout the event, the concept of the “prompt engineer” went from a niche buzzword into a critical business function.
A prompt engineer designs, refines, and optimizes the language we use to command AI. However, the key insight for us was that this isn’t just a job title. It’s a skill set that professionals in every field—from marketing to finance—will need to cultivate.
In essence, a well-crafted prompt acts as a bridge. It connects specific human intent to the AI’s vast computational power. Without this bridge, AI is a powerful but untamed resource. With it, we can build precise, efficient, and innovative solutions.
This is why we believe mastering the skills from the AI prompt design challenge is so important.
Deconstructing the Prompt: The Art and Science of AI Communication
As mentioned, a core principle we learned at the AI prompt design challenge is that the quality of the AI’s output is directly tied to the quality of the input. Think of a prompt not as a simple question but as a detailed blueprint for the AI.
Here are a few keypoints:
- Structure beats spontaneity. Chatbots need clear, consistent formats.
- Rules matter. The more detailed the system prompt, the safer and smarter the AI becomes.
- Test everything. Especially the edge cases and bad actors.
- Prompting is UX. How you write determines the AI’s behavior.
The bootcamp also broke down the key elements of an advanced prompt, which we immediately put into practice.
- Persona: Assigning the AI a role (e.g., “You are an expert market analyst…”). This sets the tone and knowledge base.
- Context: Providing the necessary background and the “why” behind the task. This gives the AI focus.
- Task: Clearly defining the specific action the AI should perform. Vague instructions lead to vague results.
- Format: Specifying the desired structure of the output (e.g., “Provide the answer as a JSON object,” “Summarize in three bullet points,” or “Write in a formal tone.”).
Mastering these elements transforms your interaction with AI from a guessing game into a deliberate, goal-oriented process. This is the foundation of any successful AI prompt design challenge.
An Outlook on the Future: Widespread Adoption of Prompting Skills
Looking ahead, we see prompt engineering as a new form of literacy, as fundamental as typing or using a spreadsheet. The AI prompt design challenge solidified this view. Enterprises that invest in upskilling their workforce in this area will undoubtedly unlock greater efficiency and innovation.
Our experience with GabAI showed us how prompt engineering could:
- Train AI tools for HR, L&D, and internal communication.
- Eliminate vague responses and hallucinations.

GabAI didn’t need code. It needed design thinking, language precision, and iterative refinement. That’s what prompt engineering delivers.
